Volunteer (Various Positions - No Compensation)
Rebuilding Together Atlanta
From our onset through present day, volunteers have always been the backbone of our work. Rebuilding Together Atlanta, Inc. (RTA) could not actualize our mission to “repair homes, revitalize communities, and rebuild lives” without the ongoing support of volunteers at both the governance and operations levels.
As a local leader in home repair for 30 years, RTA has been committed to making homes safer and healthier for low-income seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities across the Atlanta metropolitan area by providing preventive modifications to their homes at no cost.
Rebuilding Together Atlanta works to improve accessibility, reduce falls, increase independence, and facilitate aging in place for many of the most vulnerable members of the Atlanta metropolitan area through the critical support of volunteers and subcontractors. Our signature program “Safe and Healthy Homes” is designed to improve aging-in-place outcomes for low-income, older adult homeowners through the modification of their home environment to meet their specific needs.
Repairing Homes
Safe and healthy housing is Rebuilding Together Atlanta’s strategic focus. Our “Safe and Healthy Homes” program is based on “The 9 Principles of Healthy Homes” developed by the National Center for Healthy Housing and endorsed by the United States (U.S.) Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). These nine (9) principles are to keep homes affordable, dry, clean, pest-free, safe, contaminant-free, well-ventilated, maintained, and thermally controlled. Additionally, RTA uses a 25-point “Safe and Healthy Checklist,” which helps identify significant health and safety hazards with homes; prioritize repairs; provide a holistic, comprehensive, and detailed scope of work; and focus home repairs on results. We also build trusting relationships with homeowners, which gives us a keen understanding of their needs to provide comprehensive home repairs and referrals to other service providers.
Revitalizing Communities
Rebuilding Together Atlanta’s work often goes beyond each home. We are deeply rooted in the community we partner with and serve by working closely with community residents and leaders to have a holistic, person-centered approach to community revitalization.
Our community of volunteers, donors, skilled contractors, and in-kind suppliers offer unmatched cost effectiveness. We strengthen the community fabric by engaging volunteers across boundaries of race, age, class, geography, and professional sector. Together, we create and execute plans to address the needs of the entire local community. By providing critical home repairs and modifications in low-income, underserved communities, we address the connection between health and housing while preserving the existing affordable housing landscape in the communities we serve.
Rebuilding Lives
Rebuilding Together Atlanta partners with homeowners in need to prevent homelessness, promote local economic prosperity and stability, and preserve generational wealth.
Older Americans are often forced to choose between paying for necessities, like food and medication or home safety improvements. According to AARP, nearly 90% of seniors would prefer to stay in their current home as long as possible. Yet, most of the existing housing stock in the U.S. does not have accessibility features and is not designed to accommodate the physical and cognitive changes that come with age. Aging in place is also widely understood to be more cost-effective compared to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. On average, a private room or apartment in an assisted living facility is estimated to cost around $42,600 annually – yet the median annual income of RTA clients is $16,000, well below the federal poverty threshold for a family of four ($25,100 in 2018). For our clients living on extremely low fixed incomes, nursing homes and assisted living facilities are not a viable option.
RTA’s overall mission strengthens the backbone of communities by supporting our most vulnerable neighbors in need.
Your investment of time and resources will make a long-lasting impact on the lives of low-income homeowners by repairing their homes, revitalizing their communities, and ultimately rebuilding their lives one home at a time.
As part of Rebuilding Together Atlanta (RTA)’s commitment to creating opportunities for community engagement and continued investments in our critical work, we welcome volunteers to participate in a wide range of activities that provide direct support for our clients and staff. We are actively looking for people to volunteer at either the governance or operations levels of our organization.

One of the best ways to build community and connection with others is working towards a common goal together. Volunteering is a great way to develop new friendships with people who share similar interests. By volunteering your time regularly to the same organization, you can also develop friendships with those you serve.
We, as human beings, are designed to give to others and help those in need. Likewise, it makes sense when research reveals positive physiological changes when we volunteer. When volunteering, your body releases “feel-good” chemicals like oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin, resulting in an elevated mood.
We wither when we neglect fulfilling our purpose. 96% of volunteers report that volunteering enriches their sense of purpose. This is particularly valuable for those in retirement or recovering from the death of a spouse, family member, or other loved one.
Some of the healthiest people in America are those who volunteer 100 hours each year. Volunteers tend to take better care of themselves and are physically more active, have less sickness, and even live longer. Research also reveals that older volunteers can reduce their mortality rate by 24 percent!
Volunteers often feel a sense of accomplishment when they help others. As a result, this helps allow them to view themselves in a positive light.
Volunteers report feeling improved mentally and physically after spending time volunteering with others.
Volunteers make new connections, which can lead to career advancement. Volunteering also helps people try out new career fields.
Helping others while making new friends and improving your overall well-being is simply fun! It gives you something enjoyable to look forward to each week.
